A WEST Somerset charity which helps to provide wheelchair-friendly and fully accessible transport for local people is to receive a new minibus.

Over 300 charities and community groups in England will receive new minibuses from the Department for Transport’s £25million Community Transport Minibus Fund.

The Accessible Transport West Somerset group – aka Atwest – is among those to benefit from the scheme, which was announced by Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin on March 26.

The funding will help elderly residents, people with learning and physical disabilities, and those who do not have access to a commercial bus service.

Atwest, founded in 2005, helps those without their own transport or who cannot access public or other transport facilities due to to a lack of availability or because health, age or disability make it difficult.

The wide-ranging services it provides include the West Somerset car scheme, club travel, shopping routes, school transport and health care transport.
