A RUN-DOWN scrubland in Watchet is to get a make-over to return it to its former glory.

Locals say the cliff top field over-looking the marina has the best views in the town.

But decades of neglect and erosion have turned the derelict land into an eye-sore.

Now a local group, the Onion Collective CIC, is looking for volunteers to give the area a new lease of life.

Group spokesman Georgie Grant said the former Victorian pleasure ground once held events including football matches and circus visits.

"We are looking for anyone who might have information about how the pleasure grounds used to look or be used," said Georgie.

"We also need anyone with landscaping or horticultural skills, or who might have tools that we can borrow. In addition, we are looking for people who would just like to roll up their sleeves and muck in with us. An important part of the project is around sharing skills, learning new skills, making new friends and working together as a community.

"The landowner John Richards is charging a peppercorn rent so the land can be designed, landscaped and maintained by local people."

The team will have a stall at Watchet Summertime on Sunday August 9. For more information email: info@onioncollective.co.uk or Tel: 01984 633496
