THE West Somerset Railway Association Steam Fayre and Vintage Vehicle Rally at Norton Fitzwarren has experienced its best turnout ever.

Organisers say the event on Saturday and Sunday, was its best and biggest since it began almost three decades ago.

Ian Jonas, chairman of the rally committee, said: “We had tickets being sold to people in Carlisle and Chester. Events like this puts the railway on the map.

“To see the joy on people’s faces, it makes the hard work worth the effort.”

The highlight of the weekend came when the late David Holmes, a volunteer at the WRSA for some thirty years, was commemorated by the renaming of the platform at Norton Fitzwarren station.

Mr Holmes, who died last year, was the engineering mastermind behind the unique triangle of track which made it possible for trains to turn there.

A village green, which hosted the crafts exhibits, proved to be a great success and organisers hope next year can be an even better family day out.
