A West Somerset heritage railwayman's grass will be a cut above the rest after winning a magnificent new lawnmower in a recent giveaway by The Sun national newspaper.

As a self-proclaimed ‘train buff’ and volunteer for West Somerset Railway John Castle will be using the £2,000 Bosch GRA 53 professional mower to keep the verges trim and tidy at stations along the line after his lucky winning card was drawn from a large pool of deserving entries – over 1,800,000 readers were reached by the competition’s launch.

Presented in Taunton with his prize by Steve and Val Bradley, with Gonzalo Brey of Bosch Lawn & Garden Power Tools, and Jonathan Harrison of Rochford’s Garden Machinery, Mr Castle said: “I’m very involved with steam trains and heritage railways.

“It’s good to be able to help keep stations looking attractive for the many people who visit every year and keep these lovely old trains running.”

Given that this state-of-the-art battery mower can cut 1000 square metres of turf an hour, puts out half the noise of a normal machine and, if used for six hours a day, can save its owner around £600 a year on fuel compared to a petrol motor, it is clear that with Mr Castle’s loving care (and powerful new tool) will help West Somerset Railway continue to be a great experience for all the family.
