AN ARMY of rockers from all over the world headed down, down to Butlins in Minehead for the first ever international Status Quo fan convention in Minehead last weekend.

It is 50 years since Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt met by chance on Butlins in 1965 and to celebrate Quo fans came out in force to celebrate their idols.

Although sadly Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt didn't make an appearance, there were performances from original Quo drummer John Coghlan's band as well as bassist John Edwards' band Rhino's Revenge.

The event, which was co-organised by 17-year-old mega fan Aidan Johnson and Status Quo fan club organiser Yvonne Hanvey, also saw a number of Status Quo tribute bands take on favourite albums.

Lee Hawkins, who flew in from Australia to attend, said: "It seems fitting then that the first International Status Quo Fan Club Convention should be held at the very place where chance would bring Francis and Rick together for the first time.

"So, here we are, some 50 years after this chance meeting in this place to celebrate this special anniversary together as Quo fans. It has been a remarkable weekend inspired by a remarkable history of a remarkable band."

The Quo, whose hits include 'Rockin All Over the World', 'Whatever You Want' and 'Caroline', are renowned for supposedly only knowing three chords but that has not stopped them selling 118 million albums worldwide.
