WEST Somerset College has taken 'positive steps' towards the removal of their special measures rating, according to a report released this week.

Following a visit from Her Majesty's Inspectors at the beginning of this month, the College received confirmation that it is improving and 'leaders and managers are taking effective action toward the removal of special measures'.

The College was given targets in October 2014 to strengthen leadership, improve teaching, raise achievement and attendance, and eradicate poor behaviour.

The inspectors noted an improvement of 13% in examination results as a step in the right direction and pupils were recognised for the improvement in their attendance, behaviour and attitudes.

Jane Aplin, acting principal said: “There is no doubt about the very positive effect the changes are having. All of this is underpinned by a very hardworking, professional and committed staff. I am also very proud of our students. They are polite, friendly and their uniform and behaviour is fantastic.”

“Many of our students spoke to inspectors during their visit and showed the College at its very best. In order to thank students, we are awarding everyone ten reward points. Every single one of them did their very best during the inspection visit.”

“The message to us now is clear: it’s all about what happens in the classrooms. Again we must work together to ensure that every lesson is as good as the best.”
