A man is believed to have been taken to hospital after his mobility scooter fell into a ditch in Minehead.

The incident happened near to the Tesco store on Seaward Way earlier this afternoon and the man suffered head injuries from the fall.

Eyewitnesses said that he fell off his mobile scooter and ended up in a ditch.

He was found by a passer-by who ran into the store to call for help.

Paul Strom, who works at Tesco, said he was aided by an air cadet and a nurse who were luckily there at the time before emergency services were called.

The fire service, ambulance crews and the air ambulance all attended.

The air ambulance was not needed and the man was taken away in the ambulance.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said they were called at 5.22pm.

They added: "Numerous fire crews were mobilised to near Tesco in Minehead after reports of a disabled male fallen into a 6 foot ditch and suffering a head injury.

"Once Minehead crews arrived they stated no more further appliances were required and they were able to assist police and ambulance to remove the gentleman and leave him with ambulance crews."

It is not known yet how serious his injuries are.
