A HARDY group of West Somerset adventurers are testing their resolve by taking on endurance tasks for good causes.

Minehead Pilates teacher Ros Willicombe will be participating in the London Triathlon to raise funds for Taunton Mencap which help children with learning disabilities in the area.

Super fit Ros will be swimming 1,500m, cycling 40km and running 10km around the capital and is hoping to raise £1,000.

Taunton Mencap development officer Judith Bryant said: “We do not receive any funding and rely entirely on donations, grants and members contributions as well as extraordinary people like Ros who are willing to go the extra mile, literally.”

Minehead’s Holly Scrivener will take on the entire 630 mile South West Coast Path from Minehead to Poole to raise funds for Girlguiding South West England.

Holly will be setting off on Friday, July 22 at 12.30pm and will have a number of Brownies and Guides at the starting point to see her off.

The walk will take approximately seven weeks to complete, to donate to her cause go to www.justgiving.com/fundraising/SWCP2016.

Meanwhile a group of rugby-loving friends from West Somerset have raised more than £1,500 to help disabled and disadvantaged children by stepping out along the South West Coast Path.Dave Dunster and Andy Eastaugh, who work at EDF Energy’s Hinkley Point B power station near Bridgwater, were joined on the walk by Dave Lamb, who works for Minehead bagpipe makers David Naill and National Trust Holnicote Estate ranger Paul Camp. Tim Barrett was their support driver. The four had aimed to complete the 36 miles-long Exmoor section of the coast path in just 15 hours but smashed their target by reaching journey’s end in 11 hours and 59 minutes. As the group are all keen rugby fans, having played for Minehead Barbarians Rugby Club in the past and currently coach the club’s junior players, they decided to support the sport’s official charity, Wooden Spoon.

“We started at 4.30am in Combe Martin and managed a good pace all the way to Minehead,” said Dave Dunster.

“We had some fantastic support along the way with family and friends joining us for parts of the walk to keep us going.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to Foxes Academy, David Naill and Co Ltd and Nicholls and sons Plumbing as these were our 'leg' sponsors while Western Power Distribution also gave a very generous donation.”
