A DAY in support of cultural cohesion is being held in Minehead.
The West Somerset Inter-Cultural Friendship Group is joining with Amnesty International and the residents of Minehead in Wellington Square to spread the message “All Different – All Equal”.
The event starts at 10.30am on Saturday, running into the afternoon.
The West Somerset group says that it recognises the enriching qualities of multi-cultural society and the great contributions immigrants make to services such as the NHS, farms, care homes and schools.
Peter Stevenson, of the west Somerset Inter-Cultural Friendship Group, said: “All decent people will be appalled by the recent increase in racist verbal and physical attacks on ethnic minority people.
“Even here in west Somerset there have been reports of intimidation. Nobody deserves to be abused because they are an immigrant.
“Let’s keep Minehead and the rest of West Somerset a people-friendly, welcoming place for which it is famous. Let’s promote cohesion and harmony for all members of our community.”
The day will include music and poetry performances and the group are invite people to sign a petition. The petition is calling for West Somerset Council to publicly condemn racism and promote cohesion within the community.
