AN APPEAL has been launched to find people to join a steering board for the project to turn Minehead's Old Hospital into a community hub.

Having been granted planning permission for change of use from West Somerset Council and registering as a Community Interest Company, the owners are now are seeking people to join a steering group for the project.

Minehead Connect has been selected as a working title for the project to restore and revitalise the building, with the formalities to create and register a CIC, expected to be completed within the next few weeks.

Joint owner and director of MOTHI (Minehead Old Town Hall Investments Ltd.), Bill Howard said: “Lots of people want to know what is planned and have ideas about how they would like to see this project develop.

"We would like to hear from anybody who is interested in being part of the steering group or as a board member.

“This is an exciting opportunity to be at the centre of this project, not only to save an iconic building but to create a lasting legacy for the people of West Somerset.”

Minehead’s former hospital hosted its first official community event last Friday, 7 October.

Charities and community groups exhibited on the forecourt and members of the public were able to find out more about their work.

The biggest draw was, as ever, the chance to see inside the building, with nearly 200 people visiting during the day, many of whom took advantage of the opportunity to follow a guided tour with Mr Howard.

Others were able to view a slideshow of historical photographs, present day pictures and some suggestions of possible future uses for the site.

Mr Howard added: “It was wonderful to see the public using the building again, albeit in a small way.

“This building is clearly loved by local people, and I hope that together we can restore its former glory and create a vibrant community facility for Minehead and the surrounding areas.”

“Our vision for this iconic building has always been for it to become a community hub for Minehead and the surrounding area. The forecourt gives us the opportunity to begin to serve the community before the renovation work is complete."

Anyone wanting to find out more about joining the steering group or board, or any organisation interested in using space within the building can email: info@mineheadconnect.co.uk or telephone 01643 709134 for more information.
