ARE you still looking for a New Year resolution? Then volunteering in West Somerset could be just the job.

West Somerset Community Employment Hubs are seeking new volunteers and some of the current team have shared their stories about why they got involved and what they get out of it.

Martin Spink, volunteer at ‘The Bridge’ Employment Hub, Minehead, said: “I have had employment from the day I left school until the day I retired at the age of 60, and I shall always consider this to have been a huge blessing both for myself and my family.

“There are so many, however who are not in that position and I count it an opportunity and a privilege to do something to help them. The Bridge is a great place to come and do this.

“I do not profess to be in any sense an expert, but I am happy to share my experiences of sitting on both sides of the interview table, and to do all I can to help people into employment, such as writing CVs and helping to complete applications on line.

"In particular, I believe our strength is to offer encouragement and hope when both may be in short supply.

“I think that this is where the Bridge is making its mark, and to hear when people are successful in securing employment, makes all the effort worthwhile.”

Rose, who helps at at the Employment Hub at The Sanctuary in Watchet, said: "During my own working life I had many roles, from bank clerk, cleaner, post 'lady', teacher for adults, secretary, PA as well as those roles that women undertake without considering them - mother, grandmother, carer, wife. I had also volunteered in the health Service and local politics.

“I felt that volunteering with the Employment Hub matched my skill set and that I could be some use to people hunting for work.
"This became especially so when Watchet lost it main employer in Wansbrough Paper Mill.

"I have found it worthwhile and enjoyable. It gives me opportunity to interact with a wide range of people and any way they serve a wicked cup of coffee!”

Another volunteer, Steve, added: “The reason I do volunteer work: I get satisfaction from helping people improve their lives and for them to achieve things they felt were unattainable. Also to help people overcome their problems and continue to improve and hold onto my skills.

“Having moved to a new area, volunteering at the hub gives me an opportunity to interact socially and be of value to the community.

"I have done volunteer work in the past with various organisations and found it very rewarding. I have appreciated the company and support of my colleagues at the hub and it is nice to feel that my contribution is valued.”

Employment hubs currently run in Williton, Watchet, Minehead, Stogursey and Dulverton.
