ONE of Somerset's more bizarre traditions got underway in Porlock as the village held its annual Wassailing event.

Not even the winter weather could keep people away as a good crowd gathered for the parade outside Porlock Visitor Centre at 6pm on Friday night and headed out to bless the trees in the village's orchards.

Martyn and Lorraine Babb led the parade with music while Tamara Bruce was this year's Wassail Queen.

The parade finished at the Community Orchard and was followed by a performance of a newly-written Mummers Play at The Dovery Solar Manor.

Cider flowed in the evening when the community gathered together to sing, dance and encourage a good harvest.

The wassail is a tradition used to scare aware evil spirits to ensure a good harvest of fruit in the autumn for the cider.
