SOMERSET cricket stars Marcus Trescothick and James Hildreth visited to help raise funds for Minehead Cricket Club.

A special evening was held at the West Somerset Golf Club on Saturday night where there was a two course meal and question and answer session with the two decorated sportsmen.

Stuart Tudball, Minehead Cricket Club fundraiser and groundsman, said it was fantastic evening and it was brilliant to meet Marcus and James.

"We had around 110 people come to the event which packed out the golf club. Marcus and James were both really down to earth and were happy to answer questions," Mr Tudball said.

"Getting players of their calibre down to Minehead was a real draw.

"We raised £3,000 to go towards our new cricket nets on the night, and added to that was a further £370 from 1610 Sports and Leisure."

1610 in Minehead held a sponsored spinning event in December, which jointly raised funds for the cricket club and mental health charity Mind.

Members of Minehead Cricket Club also presented Marcus Trescothick with a trophy to commemorate his achievements.

The former England international, who played 76 test matches for his country, tweeted: "Thank you for my trophy and a great evening at Minehead Cricket Club, fantastic group of people."

The Somerset legend continues to play for the county at the age of 41, while also working as a commentator and analyst for Sky Sports in the off-season.

Batsman James Hildreth meanwhile is currently in his testimonial year as reward for his sterling career for Somerset.

The money raised from the evening will go toward new nets for Minehead Cricket Club which they hope to have ready by the start of the season.

The popular club has three men's teams, a number of junior teams which start at under 9's, and a ladies team.
