A GAS leak has led to a road closure in Minehead.

Wales and West Utilities said it is important repairs are carried out now and is unsure how long the work will take.

A stretch of Townsend Road will be closed until the repairs are complete.

Nick Sealy, Wales and West Utilities Gas Emergency Services Manager for Minehead, said: “We are working in the Townsend Road area of Minehead to repair a leak on a gas pipe.

"Our engineers are working as safely and as quickly as we can to make a repair, however, in order to complete our work, we must now replace some of the damaged pipe.

"In agreement with Minehead Town Council, and so that road users, pedestrians and our colleagues are kept safe while we work, Townsend Road will be closed at its junction with Irnham Road. All diversion routes will be clearly signposted.

"This is a complex job, and we do not yet know how long our work will take to complete. All businesses in the area remain open and are accessible via the diversion route.

“We appreciate that working on roads such as these is not ideal, but it is important that we fix this leak now, in order to continue to provide a safe and reliable supply of gas to homes and businesses.
