Work starts on Minehead Eye

WORK on the new Minehead Eye youth and community centre got under way last week.

Building contractor Russell Construction is now on-site to start groundwork investigations and to establish the site offices and compound.

The state-of-the-art multi-million pound facility will provide a dedicated, purpose-built extreme sports and youth and community centre on Mart Road in Minehead.

It will provide access to facilities which encourage creativity in sports, art, music and media.

There are plans to start laying the foundations in the next few weeks, the steel frame will go up in August with the brick work and roof following in September and October.

The building is set to be finished in May-June next year and is the culmination of many years of work by the dedicated project team and young people from the area.

Naomi Griffith, director of Minehead EYE, said: “It is so exciting to have the building contractors on site starting to build Mine-head Eye.

“After so many years it seems incredible that we are finally nearly there. From here things just get more exciting as we see the centre being built and finalise firm plans for the activities and services that the centre will provide.

“We are doing loads of work with young people and have recently set up a youth board, as well as doing lots of consultation work with students at West Somerset Com-munity College.

“We are also putting together a newsletter to keep everyone posted with updates on the project and news on how to get involved, so look out for that next month.”

Cllr Neil Parbrook, West Somerset Council’s community lead member, said: “The council is delighted to help the project team celebrate this major milestone.”

Minehead Eye was recently awarded £3.2m of funding through the Myplace programme, funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) and delivered by the Big Lottery Fund.

West Somerset Council recently reaffirmed its commitment to fund £250,000 towards the project.
