Dunster children raise money for Mozambique

YOUNGSTERS at Dunster First School dressed in the colours of the Mozambique flag to raise money for the country's children and their families.

The school was taking part in the 2010 UNICEF Day for Change, donating £1 donation to wear red, green, black, white and yellow clothing.

Children and staff also attended a special assembly where they learned what life was like for the African country's children.

The school raised more than £150.

As part of the Day for Change, the school also celebrated being awarded UNICEF's Level 1 Rights Respecting School Award.

The award encourages schools to:

*Embed the United National Convention of the Rights of the Child within the values and ethos of the school.

*Develop children's knowledge and understanding of the UNCRC.

*Develop a rights respecting culture within the school.

*Involve pupil participation in decision-making throughout the school.

Dunster First School is only the second school in Somerset to be presented with the award.

Head teacher Peter Hoyland said: “I would like to thank everyone in the school community for the work they have done in helping us to achieve this award.

“Over the past year-and-a-half, the children, staff and governors have developed a real appreciation of the rights of children and what we can do both as individuals and as a school to support UNCRC.”
