Public toilets under threat in West Somerset

The public toilets in Blenheim Gardens could be one of those facing closure. The public toilets in Blenheim Gardens could be one of those facing closure.

VISITORS and people living in West Somerset alike could lose out if proposals to cut another service in the region go through.

West Somerset Council has floated plans to permanently close five less well-used public toilets in Blenheim Gardens and the Carousel in Minehead, Church Street in Dunster, Harbour Road in Watchet and Porlock Central in a bid to save cash.

It comes as the contract with recycling and waste company Veolia ends of September 30 and new terms will be agreed for the upcoming three-year contract, which could save £80,000.

The council’s scrutiny committee has agreed that the toilets should remain closed after their normal winter closure on November 1 and a final decision will be made by full council at a meeting on September 19.

But the conclusion will be subject to a full public consultation and discussions with town and parish councils affected to determine whether they are able to take over the running of the toilets in question.

Lost for words - they might as well close the town to visitors if they close the toilets The town and beach will become a smellie place.

They might as well close the whole area for business. What a ridiculous decision, visitors are the life blood of the area, those with young children need these facilities. Has no one in the decision making process actually thought this through properly or even considered the impact that it will have on visitor numbers? They are obviously not in business themselves or they would have realised what this decision would mean. Without visitors, many businesses will suffer and without these businesses, there will be less jobs. Well done!

What's more, a closed toilet block stands out to visitors as a beacon that the local council doesn't care for them - madness.

The way things are 'proceeding' under this current Con-Dem government of austerity for the 99%, don't be surprised if the council try to sell off (in one...erm....big 'job lot') the five decommisioned toilet blocks to Tesco so they can open even yet more unwanted Tesco Expresses!
