A PARENT and child had to be helped from their home in Wellington after a fire started in a bedroom late at night.
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were called to the fire, which happened on Jurston Lane, Wellington, at 11.54pm.
The person who notified the fire service was still inside the house, and as two appliances were mobilised to the scene, the parent and child were guided out of the house by the call handler.
On arrival, the incident commander confirmed smoke was billowing out of the house, from an upstairs bedroom, but that all people in the house had been accounted for.
The incident commander then requested another fire engine, and firefighters battles the fire using a hose reel jet and breathing apparatus.
The fire was extinguished shortly before 12.30am, and firefighters checked neighbouring properties to ensure no damage had been caused.
It is believed the fire was started accidentally, but the bedroom suffered 25 per cent fire damage, and the rest of the upstairs had suffered 80 per cent smoke damage.
Firefighters gave fire safety advice to nearby residents, before leaving shortly before 1am.
