THE Taunton Tigers Veteran basketball team has helped boost the County Gazette-backed Somerset Unit for Radiotherapy appeal.

The Be SURE to help campaign aims to raise £1million to equip the new Beacon cancer centre being built at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton.

This week, the Slapheads team completed a series of gruelling challenges to raise £1,136 for the cause.

They embarked on the second leg of their ‘world tour’ in Minehead where the 17 basketball players completed ten mystery challenges at Butlins, they went canoeing on Wimbleball Lake and ‘ran the gauntlet’ under Dulverton Bridge.

The appeal’s ‘world’s largest 5p collection’ has also seen further contributions this week with £20.65 from the Taunton Hard of Hearing Club (who also made a £20 donation), £21.05 from Taunton Bowling Club, and £10.10 from Evelyn Winn.

Those donating using the form in the County Gazette included Jim Legg, £75, and Stephen Carter, £25.

The latest fundraising beings the County Gazette readers’ contribution to the appeal to £128,667.70.

Fundraising events in aid of SURE coming up soon include:

  • Sunday October 12 (not October 14 as published last week), tea dance at Bishopswood Village Hall from 2-5pm
  • Friday, October 10, bingo at Creech St Michael village hall – eyes down at 7.30pm.
