Royal Marines march - 30,000 turn out to cheer Commandos
10:40am Thursday 18th November 2010 in Shoulder To Shoulder
AN estimated 30,000 people lined the streets of Taunton town centre to welcome home the men of 40 Commando this morning.
There were cheers, clapping and flag waving as people showed their appreciation for the Marines' efforts during their six-month tour of Afghanistan.
Rain fell throughout the march and inspection outside the Market House.
Taunton Deane Mayor Cllr Jefferson Horsley told the crowds: "They are indeed special to us."
Lady Gass, Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, told the Marines: "Everyone is very proud of what you have achieved."
Defence Secretary Dr Liam Fox attended the event.
He said: "If you can brave the Taliban, we can brave the weather."
He added: "We're all here today to pay tribute to the professionalism, dedication and duty of our Armed Forces and in particular 40 Commando."

The incredible events of earlier today ably demonstrate just how much we, the citizens of Taunton and surrounding areas, value the contribution made by ‘Our’ boys and ensured you received the Heroes Welcome you so richly deserve. We stand behind you and the many other brave local men and women of our Armed Forces, incredibly proud of your efforts and the contribution you have, and continue to make on behalf of the Nation and while 14 of your comrades were sadly missing from today’s parade, they will never be forgotten.

Just one comment - as a participator of many marches in the past - I suspect the figures for the turnout was much nearer 10,000 than 30,000 as mentioned.
It doesn't detract in anyway from the occasion. There was a great sense of unity and empathy with the Marines and they deserve the accolade they got.
