Defending our Green Fields Cries of ‘shame’ came from many people who joined me in attending last week’s Deane council planning committee meeting to argue against inappropriate housing development on 19 acres of green fields at Bishops Hull.

As I predicted, the Deane council have rubber stamped plans to force elderly and vulnerable tenants out of their homes to make way for intensive new housing development.
Only a fortnight ago I again called for more police officers to be employed in the communities of Taunton Deane rather than being posted to Bristol.

I was delighted to see that Taunton’s successful Energize scheme has become one of the first projects awarded funding as a result of the police being able to seize cash from criminals.

I sympathise with Parmin Close residents who are being forced out of their homes to allow Taunton Deane Council to demolish their bungalows to make way for a new housing scheme.

The traffic congestion on Taunton’s roads is one of the chief concerns of local people when I listen to them while out in my mobile surgery or when they come to see me at one of the three local advice surgeries I hold every week. It can sometimes take 20 minutes or more just to get from one side of Taunton to another.

I had a lesson last week in how Taunton Deane Council planners treat the people they represent - that’s us, the council taxpayers. We were particularly upset in North Curry last year to see our local pub demolished. The developers didn’t even tell the council, as they were supposed to, that they were going to do it.

I was recently a guest at the annual meeting of Advocacy in Somerset, which helps mentally ill people by ensuring their voice can be heard. I quickly learned that even in this day and age, there is still a stigma to suffering a mental illness or previously having one. There continues to be a lack of understanding that having a mental illness is much like having a ‘regular’ illness, and, just as with other health issues, they very often can be cured or treated.
