A BEEF processing company is “excited” to be able to showcase the range of opportunities available to apprentices in Somerset.

Staff from ABP Langport will be on hand to promote the butchery courses it offers to students.

Angela Brewer, people change officer at ABP Langport, said she was looking forward to welcoming youngsters to find out more about the company and perhaps introduce them to a career they hadn’t considered.

“We are excited for the Skills and Apprenticeship Fair and hope we get a lot of people interested in our stand and recruit some trainees and apprentices,” she said.

“We feel a little bit apprehensive as we are not recruiting for an ordinary apprenticeship. Butchery is not as much of an attractive profession for some young people compared to construction or engineering.

“This will be a great opportunity for us to showcase what apprenticeships are out there for young people and we hope to see a lot of people at our stand at the show.”

ABP Langport offer a Level 2 Butchery apprenticeship where students will be trained as a beef butcher at their centre in Langport.

Currently, the company is looking to recruit 12 new apprentices this year to join their training scheme, which is set to start in October.

ABP UK is part of the ABP Food Group and processes around one million cattle each year.

The company works with many of Europe’s largest supermarket chains and food retailers to ensure the highest quality beef is produced with full traceability from “farm to fork”.
