A spokesman for CITB said: “An apprenticeship in construction offers an exciting opportunity to literally shape the world around you.

"Using innovative and ever changing technology and techniques, a construction career could be in one of the many trade apprenticeships such as brick work, carpenter and joiner, steelfixer or painter and decorator with real opportunity to progress into supervisory roles.

“Construction companies are increasingly looking for young people to train as future site supervisors, quantity surveyors and technicians, so whatever a person’s background, construction provides excellent career opportunities.”

Somerset County Gazette:

CITB say apprenticeships offer a great alternative to university education, giving them them the chance to earn while they learn and avoid racking up huge debts.

“Apprentices gain hands on practical experience and are in the industry when they complete their studies which gives them a head start along their career path,” the spokesman added.

“Students also learn important life skills like confidence, time-keeping and decision making.

“Apprenticeships provide an opportunity to mix with a wide range of people and make crucial contacts in the sector who often make great advisors and mentors.

“Many construction apprentices say that no two days are the same – on Monday they might be at college with peers, Tuesdays are on site and Wednesdays in the office.

“Finally there’s great scope for career progression. Apprenticeships are often the beginning of a fulfilling and rewarding career. CITB research shows that six out of ten company owners started life as an apprentice.”
