PADBROOK Park reached the second round of the Mail on Sunday Classic with a 3-2 victory at Minehead and West Somerset.

Tom Evans led the way with a two hole victory in the top match.

Rod Hutchings halved his match while William Blundell enjoyed a two hole victory in his match.

Cary Rawlings lost to an opponent who fired six birides in the first ten holes. So it came down to club captain Phil Moore, who needed to avoid defeat to secure the win.

He lost the 17th hole to a birdie to leave the match all square.

However the final hole was halved in four which as enough for Padbrook to progress as they completed a repeat of their victory at the same course in 2007.

Rob Broomfield and Kev Taylor will represent Padbrook Park in the Daily Mail foursomes.

The pair scored a nett 64.5 in the qualifying event. They enjoyed a comfortable four shot cushion over Nick Cowley and Ashley Pym who scored 68.5.

Phil Moore and Duncan Stamp who are previous winners of this club event finished in third spot.

The pair will find out which club they will meet in their first round tie in the next few weeks.

n THE knock-out stages of the men's Winter Foursomes at Tiverton have finally got under way after rain and snow delayed earlier attempts to start the round of 32.

Ten of the 16 matches were completed on Saturday, while the deadline for the remaining games is this weekend.

Jan Carroll and Val Walker shared first place with Shirley Ward and Maureen Postles in the ladies' greensomes competition on Wednesday.

The pairs scored 22 Stableford points apiece over 11 holes and couldn't be separated after a series of countback scenarios.

Margot Seamer and Teresa Birchmore finished third with 20.

The club is playing host to its first ever Frog Racing event on Friday 1 March (7pm).

The event, for members and friends, will see six wooden frogs line up in eight races.
