FOOTBALL: Wellington lose at Corsham Town
WELLINGTON went down to defeat in Wiltshire for the second successive Saturday as they lost 3-0 away to Corsham Town yesterday.
While they were controversially beaten 2-1 at Bradford Town the previous weekend – losing to a disputed penalty – this time the margin of defeat was more comprehensive.
Wellington started brightly with Corey Lewis, restored in attack, looking particularly lively but they fell behind to a goal out of the top drawer after 15 minutes.
Corsham were awarded a free-kick 30 yards out and Dan King gave keeper Jake Viney no chance with one of the best-executed dead ball efforts you’re likely to see.
Wellington had a couple of good chances to equalise when both Lewis and Nicky Ford were left with only the keeper to beat but were unable to net.
At the other end, the excellent Viney pulled off a couple of smart stops before the home side increased their lead seven minutes before the break.
A clearance from Viney reached Corsham’s Nick Holton in midfield and, when he played the ball forward to Booker Woodford, the striker skipped inside before scoring with a powerful drive.
That left Wellington with a mountain to climb and they could not claw their way back into the game after the break.
Corsham substitute Jamal Chevellou saw a shot smack against the bar before making the points safe with his side’s third goal with four minutes remaining – breaking clear to poke the ball past the onrushing Viney.
Wellington: Jake Viney, Tom Ellis, Scott Holland, Ed Weeks, Jack Adams, Nicky Ford, Tom Hopkins, Joe Holmes, Darren Rice, Corey Lewis, Kyle Bassett. Substitute: Max Westlake (used). Attendance: 68.
