FOOTBALL: Murray saves the day for Peacocks
2:08pm Sunday 25th August 2013 in Sport
TAUNTON Town drew 1-1 at home to Shortwood United in the Calor Gas Southern league yesterday thanks to a late equaliser by Steve Murray, writes James Wright.
New signing from Clevedon Town, Steve Kingdon, was drafted into the side, the only starting line-up change from the draw with Yate.
Shortwood, who completed the double over their hosts last season, made a bright start and Taunton keeper Kyle Moore had to be at his sharpest to race off his line and thwart Duncan Culley.
The visitors had an even better chance on the half hour when Mark Pritchett slammed a header against the cross bar.
Alton Axton also hit the woodwork as the Gloucestershire continued to look the more promising outfit after the interval.
Taunton finally awoke from their slumber, Chris Young teeing up man-of-the-match Rob Norrish to fire into the side netting. However, they fell behind in the 65th minute.
Culley mesmerised the home defence with some deft trickery down the left and served up an unmissable chance for Tim Haddock.
Town salvaged a point when, Steve Murray, just three minutes after replacing Nat Pepperell, reacted quickest to drill home a loose ball.
The summer signing from Street thus bagged his third goal in as many games, some achievement having been on the pitch less than 50% of the time.
Buoyed by the goal, Taunton looked the more likely winners in the closing stages, but ultimately had to settle a third draw on the trot.
