RUGBY: Wellington Under-18s lose Weston Hornets rematch
2:24pm Sunday 8th September 2013 in Sport
WELLINGTON U18s lost 25-7 to their Weston Hornets counterparts in their first game of the season on Saturday.
The game was a re-match of last season’s Somerset Cup final and unfortunately for the Red & Blacks the result was the same.
Straight from the kick off Hornets used their much larger forwards to great effect, putting the home team under pressure, especially in the scrum.
But Wellington’s brave and committed defence held Hornets at bay until mid-way the through the half and on the stroke of half-time to go in at the interval 10-0 down.
Apart from Hornets catching the Red & Blacks off guard and scoring straight from the re-start, the second half was very similar to the first period.
Wellington finally crossed the try, which was no more than their efforts deserved, when Jamie Hayman showed the covering Hornets defence a clean pair of heels to score underneath the posts. James Weeks converted to make the final score 25-7.
Coach Allyn Chetland said: “Despite the result the lads can take great encouragement by the way they played with the whole of the squad showing huge commitment and passion to the cause which bodes well for future games.
“Harry Ramsey, Paul Steer, Joe Coppin, Jack Richards and Harry Macdonald had magnificent games in the forward battle while out in the backs Oscar Harrington, George Hodgson and James Weeks always looked dangerous with ball in hand.
This Saturday the U18s entertain Minehead at 2.30pm.
