HORSE RACING: Jason Loosemoore is new clerk of the course at Taunton
9:25am Friday 25th October 2013 in Sport
JASON Loosemore is the new clerk of the course at Taunton Racecourse . . . and his first meeting will be the curtain-raiser on Thursday, November 14.
Loosemore started his racing career in Hereford when it was an independent racecourse before Northern Racing took over and he began his clerking role.
He said: “I stayed for a further three seasons when the opportunity became available to clerk down at Newton Abbot, which I still enjoy to this day.”
Newton Abbot is a summer course (April-October), so the two posts should dovetail together well for Loosemore.
He added: “I’m extremely excited at the prospect of starting as clerk here and it’s a wonderful opportunity to join a great team.
“The clerk works very closely with the head groundsman and his team, and we’re very lucky at Taunton because we have a cracking team led by head groundsman Kevin Counsell and they do a great job.”
Loosemore is replacing Mike Trickey, who was clerk at Taunton for nearly 20 years before he died in July, and he has a hard act to follow.
“Mike was a super fellow. He was respected and loved by everybody in the South-West, which was borne testament at his memorial service a couple of months ago.
“I’m under no illusions because Mike was a great chap and a great guy to do this job, and if I can do it the same sort of way that would be great for me.
“It takes a lifetime to get to know a racecourse, and things will develop as they have done under the board’s directorship and the care of the ground staff who look after it.
“I look forward to working with them, and I’m very excited and optimistic about the future.”
Paul Barber, a director at Taunton for 14 years and owner of Gold Cup winner Denman, said: “We’re delighted to have appointed Jason Loosemore as our new clerk of the course at Taunton Racecourse.
“All my colleagues in racing circles, including people like Paul Nicholls, speak very highly of him.
“This is the start of a new era, so its’ great to welcome Jason to his new post.”
