IT WAS Craig Kieswetter’s Brisbane Heat who gained the bragging rights when they beat Alfonso Thomas’ Perth Scorchers at the Gabba on Sunday morning, although neither Somerset player made a major contribution.

After opting to bat, the Scorchers posted 151-7, Thomas ending one not out from the solitary ball he faced, while ‘keeper Kieswetter stumped Adam Voges.

In reply the Heat lost Kieswetter for four with the total on 10 and slipped to 22-3 in the fifth before being rescued by 81 off 53 balls from Chris Lynn who helped them reach their target with three wickets and balls to spare.

Thomas sent down three overs for 33 runs.

The Scorchers are next in action on Boxing Day when they host Melbourne Renegades on Boxing Day while the Heat host Hurricanes on December 28, all games starting just after 8am UK time.

The Cidermen have just announced that in 2014 they will be launching an appeal in aid of the new Somerset Pavilion, which will replace the buildings at Old Pavilion end of the ground.

The Somerset Pavilion is Phase 4 of the club’s strategic development plan which has transformed the County Ground over the last seven years into one of the best cricketing venues in England.

This project sees the replacement of the Old Pavilion and St James Stand, with a new facility comprising high-quality covered seating behind the bowlers arm.

There will also be a large bar and entertainment area, high-quality corporate/media facilities and a magnificent roof top viewing area.

The overall cost of providing this new state-of-the-art facility is estimated in the region of £3.8million and while the vast majority of the funding is in place the £150,000 that has been targeted will make the difference.

Work on the Somerset Pavilion is expected to start at the end of the 2014 season and once completed the new building will bring the ground to the standard required to host international cricket.

Andy Nash, the chairman of the club said: “Somerset County Cricket Club is first and foremost a members’ club, owned by its members since it was founded back in 1875.

“The assistance of members and supporters in this strategic project will help cement the club’s position at the top of English cricket and ensure that both present and future generations can enjoy the immense pleasure of supporting Somerset CCC in world class facilities.”

The Somerset County Cricket Club Annual General Meeting of Members will be held in The Colin Atkinson Pavilion at The County Ground, Taunton on Monday, January 20, at 7.30pm.
