WELLSPRINGS Leisure Centre will host a busy weekend of volleyball on January 11 and 12.

On the Saturday teams for all over the West will converge for an all-day junior grand prix tournament and Taunton VC will be entering teams in all the age groups.

The following day the club’s seniors will host a double header when Taunton Lightning take on Torexe Sptifires in the second division of the Exeter League at 2pm.

This will immediately be followed at 4pm by Taunton Scorpions against Kirton VC in the top division when the Scorpions hope to get back to winning ways after a recent 3-2 defeat against Plymouth Pocket Rockets.

Last Sunday Taunton Lightning visited Exeter Prison to play Birdmen, their team of inmates who are currently top of the league.

Although clearly the more skilled and accomplished team, Taunton couldn’t match the agility and fitness levels of their hosts.

The prisoners also had three players with powerful serves and Taunton struggled to control the first pass in a hall with a low ceiling and almost no space around the court.

This proved to be a telling factor as the prisoners scored several long runs of points whereas Taunton had to work hard to score each point one by one.

Although it was a 5-0 defeat this didn’t reflect how close the game was as Taunton came close to winning three of the sets.
