YEOVIL Town's Gary Johnson has won the Football Manager Outstanding Managerial Achievement Award at The Football League Awards 2014.

Johnson received the award at the gala ceremony at The Brewery, London, on Sunday evening in front of over 600 guests from clubs, sponsors and the football industry.

This year a total of 36 clubs were shortlisted for 17 awards and Johnson beat competition from Chesterfield’s Paul Cook and AFC Bournemouth’s Eddie Howe to claim the Football Manager Outstanding Managerial Achievement Award.

Having returned to Yeovil Town in January 2012 for his second spell at Huish Park, Johnson started by leading his team to League 1 safety.

In the following season, the Glovers manager orchestrated a campaign that saw Yeovil reach the play-offs.

They beat Sheffield United in the semi-finals before a 2-1 victory over Brentford at Wembley secured their place in English football’s second tier for the first time in the club’s history.

Johnson said: “It feels great to win this award tonight, it’s a fantastic achievement for our football club.

“There are so many unsung heroes at Yeovil Town that also deserve this.

“They were trying to get in the league for 108 years and we got it ten years ago and now we’ve had a fantastic decade in the Football League.

“When we got our promotion from the Conference to the Football League you wouldn’t think we would get to the Championship by now, and to do it via Wembley was fantastic.

“There are only 40,000 people in Yeovil and we took 25,000 to the match. I’m accepting this award on behalf of everyone associated with the club.”
