BERYL Richards hit a superb hole in one when Taunton Vale took part in the Generation Cup at Weston-super-Mare.

Richards hit a beautiful golf shot with a 3 wood, in a very strong wind, to score that elusive ace on the 177 yard, par 3 11th.

The cup – an adult and junior girls’ event – was won by the home club. Vale Men’s monthly medal was also held on Sunday and saw good play and some fine scores. In Division One (h/c 0-12) Geoffrey Hill with 64, Russel Peck with 65 (back 9 countback) and G Tillett with 65 came first, second and third respectively. Alex Campbell with 65, Neil Hallett with 66 and J Webster with 67 (back 9 countback) came first, second and third respectively in Division Two (h/c 13-18). Phillip Webster scored 65 to come first in Division Three (h/c 19-28), and a 66 for Carl Dobson and a 67 (back 9 countback) for Steve Cook secured them second and third places.

There were four twos, R Peck on the 14th, M Farmer and P Webster on the 4th and A Turle on the 8th.

The Renault Cup, a men’s pairs competition, was played on Saturday. The competition, also open to juniors, is a better ball medal with a full handicap allowance up to a maximum of 28.

Roger Howard paired up with Barry Woodman and they had a nett 61 to win. The next three places went to Alan Palmer and John Paterson, Dave Hawkins and John Matravers, and Mike Bird and Jim McGuckin, all of whom had 62, with countbacks on the back 9 sorting out the places. There were six twos on the day – three on the 14th by L West, R Winter and Nigel Panter. Paul Chesney and Oli Beynon got theirs on the 4th and Roger Howard got his two, and an eagle, on Friar’s Drive, the par 4 6th.

The previous week there were three divisions for the Men’s Stableford – handicaps 0-12, 13-18 and 19-28. Paul Evans scored 40, Andy Turle scored 39 and Matt Rich scored 41 to win those divisions. There were eleven twos too, with two of them going to Nigel Gridley on the 4th and 14th. Dennis Marney, P Evans, James Keitch and M Andrews had twos on the 4th, Paul Roderick on the 8th, T Salter, F Kirkham and K Keitch on the 14th and J Storey on the 17th. The Stableford the following day had two divisions for handicaps 0-16 and 17-28. N Sealey won Division One with 41 points and Will Marchant won Division Two with 42. Four twos were scored on the 4th by B Perry, R Peck, B Davis and C Dobson. Three twos were scored on the 8th by M Andrews, C Pratt and N Bowrah. M Bradford had the final two on the 17th.

In the Ladies’ section, the Criers stroke play Competition was held over two days. There were two divisions. In Division one, Chris Lewis secured first place with a nett 69, Wendy Walker had nett 69 for second place and Karen Potter had nett 71 for the third spot. Sue Kingston had nett 73 to come in first, followed by Chris Pashley nett 78 and Carol Howe nett 82 for second and third places.
