COMEYTROWE travelled to Glastonbury to play Tor in Division 3 of the Somerset league on Saturday and, after an excellent team performance, came away with maximum points from a superb win.

They took a while to settle and trailed 11-8 after the first quarter, but the signs were there that they were beginning to find some rhythm and they reduced the deficit to a single goal and were just 19-18 behind at half-time.

Their improvement continued in the third period and, with Lucy Hemmings combining excellent movement with accurate shooting, Comeytrowe turned the match around to lead 29-27 going into the final quarter.

A steely determination from the whole team, together with a number of fine interceptions by wing defence Harriet Snell, ensured that Comeytrowe held on for a thoroughly deserved victory by 37 goals to 34.

In the same division Newbarn made the trip to Midsomer Norton to play Jesters and led by just a single goal after a closely contested first quarter.

An even second period saw Newbarn maintain their slender advantage and they still led 14-13 at half-time.

Unfortunately Jesters dominated the next period to move 28-17 ahead and, despite the valiant efforts of debutant Lucy Hunt, the damage had been done and Newbarn were defeated 38-28.

Queensway were also in Midsomer Norton to play Division Two opponents Minstrels in a match that could have gone either way.

Just 21-19 down at half-time, Queensway found themselves five goals adrift going into the last period. Excellent work in defence from Heather Manning saw Queensway pull to within one goal but Minstrels rallied again to win a close game 40-35.

First Division Parkfield completed the trio of Galmington sides in Midsomer Norton and they also came home on the wrong side of the score line but they put up a very creditable performance, with Toni Smyth particularly impressive, against a strong Harlequins team before going down 47-31.

However, Galmington’s two other Somerset League sides both enjoyed success in their matches.

Hovelands began slowly in the Premier Division against Sapphires at the Vale, but, with Jordyn Baker again in superb shooting form and Kelly Sully controlling the centre court, they recorded a comprehensive 76-43 victory.

Meanwhile in Division One, Claremont made it five league wins out of five against Abbey in Glastonbury. Claremont were only 20-17 up at the halfway stage but a fine performance from goalkeeper Tanya Contreras saw them pull away to win 45-30. TAUNTON’S first division team, Tone, convincingly beat opponents Rubies of Sydenham 52-12.

Tone started strong taking the lead 14-2 the first quarter and continued to build their lead to be 24-5 up at half time.

GK Lucy Monk and GD Kim May, were a formidable duo, which Rubies could not penetrate and with WD Alice Gauntlett backing up her defence well, proved far too strong for the Rubies attack.

Tone’s attack worked well throughout, with WA Claire Corns and GS Becky Lucas linking well.

Tone continued to break down Rubies to go into the final quarter 37-8.

Centre Hannah Robins had an outstanding game, completely controlling the centre court and making good accurate passes into GA Vicki Cornish who was in splendid form.

Other results: Quantock beat Kestrels 43-40 (POM Siobhan Cleverly and Rachel Morgan); Monmouth beat Emeralds 80-18 (POM Fee Grammer); Blackdown beat Kites 58-10 (POM Sarah Hughes).
