IT was the Somerset league’s Knock Out Cup quarter-final day on Sat-urday with three Galming-ton sides involved.

In the Kenyon Cup, Hovelands entertained an improving Wyndham of Yeovil at the Vale.

There was nothing to choose between the teams in the first quarter which ended with Hovelands holding a slender 12-11 lead.

They gradually began to exert their authority on the game in the second period but Wyndham, who are the only team to have defeated Hovelands this season, were playing their part in an exciting match and were very much in contention at half-time with Hovelands 28-22 ahead.

Hovelands seemed well in control in the next period but they were not allowed to build a large enough lead as Wyndham, to their credit, kept closing the gap.

Hovelands still had plenty to do going into the last quarter with just a 40-36 lead.

They immediately went seven goals in front but Wyndham again cut the deficit to four.

This pattern was repeated until Hovelands, for whom Danni Cross-Henley was outstanding in defence, were able to open up a decisive lead and book their place in the semi-final with a hard-earned 53-45 victory.

In the Sydenham Cup, Queensway faced Avalon of Glastonbury, who, as cup holders, brought a strong and experienced side to the Vale. Avalon quickly built a 14-5 lead and had extended this to 28-12 by half-time.

Despite a find all-round performance from Tracey Day, who moved from centre to goal attack, and a much better second half by Queensway, Avalon were always in control and ended up comfortable 51-29 winners.

In the same competition Comeytrowe made the long trip to Midsomer Norton to play Minstrels, who play in a division higher.

Comeytrowe they started well, only trailing by three goals after the first period.

Unfortunately Minstrels prov-ed too strong after that and Comeytrowe, for whom Jo Mellor had a fine match, were defeated 45-21.
