THERE'S a new face behind the drive to get more people playing and staying in golf in Somerset.

Martin Higgs, pictured right, has just taken over as the Somerset Golf Partnership’s county development officer.

He’ll be working with golf clubs and other organisations to help bring more people into the game.

Among the initiatives Martin will be promoting is the Get into golf campaign, which inspires more people to play the sport by offering great value coaching opportunities.

Martin, who has lived in Somerset and played golf since he was 11, brings a passion for golf to his new role, together with business and networking skills from the world of racing.

He’s a member and the junior organiser at Wells Golf Club, where there is a growing junior section which includes his two sons.

Josh, 15, will be the county U16 captain next year and is in the England Golf regional training squad, while Edward, nine, is developing his game.

In addition Martin is assistant manager of the Somerset U14 boys.

He also runs his own business, offering racing hospitality and entertainment packages, and in Somerset he has particularly close links with Taunton racecourse.

Higgs said: “I’ve got a commercial background and very good contacts in and around Somerset and I believe I can help to support golf clubs with their business development.

“The feedback I’ve received so far has been very encouraging and I’m enjoying meeting everyone involved in golf in Somerset.

“I’ve played golf since I was a boy and I’m delighted to be able to encourage more people to take up and enjoy the game.

“Golf is a great way to socialise, take healthy exercise and enjoy being out of doors. You can’t beat it.”
