SOMERSET director of cricket Matt Maynard questioned his player’s concentration levels during key periods of their match against Sussex, after a sixth-wicket stand of 120 between Pete Trego and Lewis Gregory salvaged a draw on day four at Taunton.

After being set 425 runs to win off a minimum of 67 overs, Somerset found themselves 84-5 after losing what Maynard described as ‘soft wickets’ – before Trego (95no) and Gregory (32) rescued the result for the home side.

But Maynard said he was ‘disappointed by the nature of the wickets that we lost’.

He said: “We saw when the guys showed a bit of fight in that last session what could be done, but I thought that we lost too many soft wickets.”

“It’s almost like we go through periods where we switch off as a team and we see that at times in the field and we also see it at times with the bat.

“It is something that we haven’t seen much of over the last couple of weeks when we have played some really good cricket, but it was apparent in this game.”

“The guys have to be straight and look at themselves and be honest with themselves, are they switched on for the full 24 hours of the cricket match?”

Somerset captain Marcus Trescothick praised the efforts and ‘great character’ of Trego and Gregory.

He said: “Pete and Lewis showed great character in that partnership to see out the game.

“It was the second in the game that Trego has been involved with, the first along with Hildy and then Lewis in the second, just digging in showing resilience and getting the job done so I am really pleased.”

“When you are in those pressure situations you have to deal with the nerves and the theatre that is created by the opposition and this was good experience for Lewis, because he hasn’t got a massive amount of runs in the games we have played so it’s good for him to spend a couple of hours at the crease.

“We put ourselves a little bit under the pump but managed to see it through.”
