GALMINGTON hosted Exeter in a mid-table clash in Regional League Division One on Sunday and, as usual, there was little to choose between the sides.

The score reached 5-5 before Galmington had a disastrous spell, allowing Exeter to score nine times without reply.

Galmington found their form and had the better of the closing minutes of the first quarter but still trailed 15-11.

Each side was having periods of dominance as Exeter went nine goals ahead again only for Galmington to reduce the deficit to just five.

However, Exeter scored twice just before half-time to lead 31-24 at the break.

The home side started the second half well and quickly closed the gap to four goals but each time Galmington got close Exeter pulled away again and they appeared well set going into the final quarter 47-38 in front.

The teams shared eight goals at the start of the final period before Galmington, for whom Emma McCormack had an excellent game at wing defence constantly intercepting the ball, scored five goals in a row and were just 51-47 behind halfway through the quarter and the result was very much in the balance.

Goals were at a premium for a while but Exeter regained control and went on to win 58-52, leaving Galmington to rue their costly poor spell early in the game.

Trident were up against Division Two league leaders Premier Romans of Bristol, but were not overawed by their opponents’ lofty position as they completely dominated the opening quarter to take a 16-5 lead.

Goalkeeper Sharon Chester was superb, brilliantly combining with Jaz Chester and Loxley King in defence to restrict the Romans’ attack.

The visitors began to find some form in the next period but could not make any inroads into Trident’s lead which was extended to 27-13 at the halfway stage.

Trident overcame early Romans pressure after half-time to remain in complete control taking a 39-23 lead into the final period.

With Romans a player down through injury in the last quarter Trident maintained their outstanding netball to pull away for a magnificent 58-27 victory.

Galmington Under 16s had a Regional League Under 16 Division Two match against Devon’s Titans.

An evenly contested first quarter ended with Galmington holding a slender 10-9 lead but, with Meg Conabeare excellent at goal attack, the opened up a 20-15 half-time advantage.

Titans managed to close the gap to 29-26 at the end of the third period but the splendid Galmington youngsters stood firm as a team in the last quarter to deservedly win an exciting match 38-34.
