Somerset County Division 1W

Minehead 5 Congresbury 0

MINEHEAD’s final home match of the 2015/16 season saw them comfortably dispose of their mid-table opponents, who they were meeting for the first time in the clubs’ 126-year history, with a rousing, masterful performance which could easily have seen them score double figures.

After two early attempts on goal in the opening minute from the visitors, Minehead soon settled and, after a solo run by Jack Furse, which took him past three opponents, Max Smith opened the scoring on three minutes after both he and fellow striker Damian Redman had missed half-chances inside the six yard box.

Congresbury keeper Reece Sullivan made a fine reflex save from Redman’s shot, as the home side kept up the pressure.

Furse made it two, after beating his marker and unleashing an unstoppable shot from outside the box as Minehead continued to pepper the Congresbury goal with attempts.

Within ten seconds of the restart, Minehead scored their third without their visitors touching the ball when Smith rose superbly to head home Scatchard’s centre.

Somerset County Gazette:

It was Sullivan who proved throughout the match to be the thorn in the home team’s side, constantly keeping strikes from Minehead’s rampant front line at bay and, without at least a dozen fine saves, the score would have told a very sorry story. Furse made it four 15 minutes from the end and completed his hat-trick with a half-volley shortly after.

Minehead travel to play Congresbury in the reverse fixture next Saturday, knowing three points will get them closer to securing second place in the league table, and promotion back to the Premier Division of the Somerset County League.
