TAUNTON Town's battle hardened players will be hoping to finish the season with a flourish when they make the trip to Banbury on Monday for the Southern League Division One S&W play-off final.

The Peacocks came back from the dead to beat Swindon Supermarine 2-1 on Tuesday night, with Lewis Powell netting the winner five minutes from time, and manager Leigh Robinson - although admitting his side had been off the pace in midweek - said everyone at the club is 'delighted' to be involved in the final.

He said: "It was a semi-final and at any level of football winning is the only thing that matters in such games.

"To be honest, we were a million miles from our best and Swindon who played really well will rightly feel very aggrieved to have not progressed.

"That said, our players did brilliantly to recover from a dreadful first half performance and grind out a win, showing good character in the process.

"I'm sure the final up at Banbury will draw a huge crowd, we're delighted to be involved in such an occasion and can now rest some weary legs and prepare for it best we can."

Should the Peacocks turn the formbook upside down and come back to Somerset with a place in the Premier Division tucked under their collective arms, they would look forward to a whole host of new venues to play at on the other side of the country including the likes of St Neots, Cambridge City, Biggleswade Town and Kings Lynn.

Should they be playing again next season in the South and West they could well be saying hello once more to Barnstaple Town, and would also renew friendships with Paulton Rovers and Bideford who are both relegated to what would look, at times, like a Western League convention.

Monday’s winner takes all game kicks-off at 3pm with all associated with the club hoping for better luck in getting to Banbury after the coach shenanigans had thrown out the pre-match preparations last Saturday.

A rallying cry has gone out from the club asking everyone who can to make the journey and witness history in the making as the 68-year-old club is 90 minutes away from the highest level it has ever been.
