ASH Priors tennis ace Lucy Shuker and doubles partner Jordanne Whiley recovered from a second-set setback to win women’s doubles bronze at the Paralympic Games in Rio.

The pair, the third seeds, beat Japan’s fourth seeds 6-3, 0-6, 6-1 to match their achievement from London 2012.

Already out of the singles, Whiley and Shuker hit back after Yui Kamiji and Miho Nijo dominated the second set, to win in one hour and 27 minutes.

And 26-year-old Shuker said she was delighted to have secured a medal, despite aiming for gold.

"We both wanted to go for the gold medal in doubles," she said.

"I knew singles for me was going to be tough, but I know for Jordanne that was a real good shot for her to go for.

"When we lost in the semi-final, we knew that if we lost this match, we'd just go home with memories.

"So getting a bronze medal is still an achievement, it's still massive, and having that medal to go home with, for me, it's still just as important and special."

Whiley, playing against her regular doubles partner in Kamiji, was happy to overcome a wrist injury that hampered her performance this week.

"In London I was young and quite fit and now, not that I'm not young, but I had this injury 48 hours ago and I did think that it was over for me," she said.

"But the medical team have been absolutely incredible and got me back on track to win this, so it's kind of a little bit more special knowing that I came from nowhere, not being able to hold a racket, to now winning a bronze."
