The extremely cold weather did not stop Wellesley Park Primary School girls as they became Somerset Under 11’s Girls football champions.

Some excellent victories in the previous rounds ensured their qualification for the finals day, which took place in Bridgwater.

After losing their first game, the Wellington school bounced back strongly and went on to win three and draw one of their next four games to progress to the semi-final, which they won 1-0 after a close match.

The final saw Wellesley Park come up against Preston School from Yeovil, and it was another very tight and hard-fought game.

The two teams could not be separated in normal time or after extra-time and the match ended goalless, meaning the destination of the trophy was to be decided from spot-kicks.

Wellesley Park held their nerve to win the extremely tense penalty shootout to become champions and they were absolutely delighted!
