THREE headed goals were the difference as Taunton Town defeated Didcot Town on Saturday, and manager Leigh Robinson praised the scorer of two of those - "brilliant" captain Matt Wright.

Owen Irish scored from a corner in the first half but it was not until Wright's second-half double that a comfortable win was secured, which keeps the Peacocks in the promotion hunt.

On Wright, Robinson said: "He was absolutely brilliant today.

"His second was a fantastic header because he was going away from goal, so he had so much work to do to get it on target, never mind find the net."

Wright has taken the captaincy for the last few matches due to regular skipper Brett Trowbridge being out with a heel injury.

"He does enjoy having the armband when Brett [Trowbridge] isn't around, so it does seem to get an extra five per cent out of him" the boss added.

"He's been brilliant for us all year, but definitely man of the match today."

Taunton's manager also hailed centre-back scoring sensation Irish, who notched his 12th goal of the season against Didcot.

"It's quite extraordinary to have scored that number of goals by the middle of February," said Robinson.

"He's got a fantastic leap, and a real desire to go and head it.

"In my time I've seen so many bigger centre-halves than him that never win a set-piece because they've not got the same desire to go win it.

"He wants to win every ball and to score goals - not every centre-half has that, but it's good that we have!"

All in all, it was a satisfying day at the office for the Peacocks, Robinson adding: "I don't think we got out of second gear really today - we did what we had to do to get the points.

"We weren't overly creative in open play, but the job was done from set-pieces, which has been the case for much of the season.

"It wasn't too physically taxing for us, as luckily we got three goals up and cruised through the last 20 minutes, so hopefully we've still got plenty left in the tank for Tuesday."

Taunton host Wimborne Town on February 14 (ko 7.45pm) and will hope for a Valentine's Day treat against the side 11th in the table - victory for the Peacocks would lift them to fourth.
