Evo-Stik Southern League Division 1 South & West
Winchester City 1, Taunton Town 1

TAUNTON Town's winning run ended at seven games, as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Winchester City on Saturday.

The Peacocks never quite found their rhythm, but did enough for a point after what was a poor first-half display by their high standards this season.

Boss Leigh Robinson made several changes from Tuesday night's win over Wantage Town, with captain Brett Trowbridge, Pierce Mitchell, Matt Buse and Craig Veal starting.

The opening 45 minutes looked destined to be goalless, as neither side could create many chances - Veal and Howard Neighbour shooting narrowly wide for Taunton and Winchester, respectively.

But eight minutes before the break the hosts took the lead through a counter-attack, Joe Briggs finding Craig Feeney on the left, and Feeney's shot beating Town keeper Lloyd Irish.

The Peacocks were much improved after the interval, and Ben Palmer and Owen Irish both saw close-range efforts cleared off the line.

On 55 minutes it was 1-1, as Veal curled the ball in from the left, the ball evading everyone to find the far corner.

Palmer shot over for the visitors, but Feeney had a glorious chance to win it for Winchester, missing the target from inside the six-yard box.

The draw sees Town unbeaten in eight games, and they stay in third in the Division 1 South & West standings, though they have lost ground on second-placed Tiverton and are now only three points ahead of Salisbury in fourth.

Taunton are away to Didcot Town, currently 14th in the table, on Tuesday night (ko 7.45pm).
