SOMERSET director of cricket Matt Maynard criticised England for leaving Craig Overton out of the side to face South Africa in the IT20 series decider in Cardiff on Sunday.

The team announcement showed that England had given a debut to Middlesex batsman Dawid Malan, but named Overton as 12th man, therefore denying the Somerset bowler his senior England debut.

It also means he is the sole member of the England squad not to get a game, having not featured in the previous games in Southampton and Taunton.

ESPN senior correspondent George Dobell said: "ECB have confirmed that Craig Overton is fit. Just not selected."

Maynard's reaction also indicates that Overton has been left out, as opposed to being unfit to play.

The 'broken word' referred to here is the line from England One-Day captain Eoin Morgan, who said: "You’ll see everybody play at least one game – this is an opportunity to give people a chance and see what they can do on the international stage."

Morgan himself has been rested for the match in Cardiff, with former Somerset star Jos Buttler captaining the side.

Of course this is not the first time this year that Maynard has criticised England, questioning the timing of a test result on Jack Leach's action being made public, the day after they were heavily beaten by India.

"I would prefer if they’d put their hand up and said they’d made a mistake with the selection, as opposed to pointing the finger at a young spinner," Maynard said.

TWIN brother Jamie Overton took five wickets in the match as England Lions completed a 257-run win over South Africa A.

Overton's explosive 3-22 on Friday evening had South Africa reeling at 29-4 overnight, and England wrapped up the emphatic victory on Saturday.

Overton made 15 and Somerset team-mate Jack Leach 16 in England's first innings of 386, before taking 2-43 and 1-71, respectively, in South Africa's 283 all out.

The Lions then made 308-6 and declared, before Overton (3-36) and Leach (1-17) helped remove the tourists for 154.

Overton will not be part of the Lions squad taking on South Africa from this Thursday, however, due to a back injury - Liam Plunkett taking his place.
