National Shield Round 2
Huish Taunton Tigers 60, Bristol Flyers II 57

HUISH Taunton Tigers faced Bristol Academy Flyers II in the National Shield on Sunday and, having narrowly lost to Flyers in the National Cup, Tigers gained their revenge.

Prior to tip-off, all in attendance paid respect to one of British basketball’s most recognisable names, Kevin Cadle, who passed away recently, with 24 seconds of applause.

In a great atmosphere, Tigers got off to a quick start with an elbow jump shot from Paul Yabsley, a drive and layup from Joe Andrews, and a three-pointer from Jack Roberts.

Flyers matched them, but Roberts and Joel Harrison had Tigers 30-26 up at halfway.

The hosts carried their momentum into the third quarter, stretching their lead to 10.

Flyers quickly regained their composure, though, and the third quarter ended 49-41.

Tigers struggled in the final quarter, and with their lead evaporating, coach Richard Anderson called a time-out to urge more composure.

In the final 30 seconds, Bristol looked to break, but Andrews darted low with perfect timing to steal the ball and Tigers saw the game out.

Taunton will host Division 3 South side Team Solent Kestrels II in the third round.

The next Tigers match at Richard Huish College is on November 4 (6pm), against Gloucester Saxons.
