A TEAM of past and present county cricketers travelled to play their annual match against Enmore Park Golf Club last week.

The visitors included Craig Overton, en route to joining up with England for the Ashes tour, but the cricketers lost 4.5-1.5.

The side also boasted Dennis Breakwell, Andy Caddick, Keith Parsons, Graham Rose, Jamie Overton and Mike Burns.

Ashes call-up Overton and partner Burns were the cricketers' only winning pair, as they beat Mike Rossiter and Steve Darch.

A FULL field of 124 players enjoyed some great late autumn conditions at Taunton and Pickeridge where the course played beautifully, with greens running over 10 on the stimpmeter.

At the end of the Halloween Stableford on Saturday, a better ball stableford, John Wall and Paddy Farrell were first with 44 points.

Second place went to junior member Alfie Jubb and Martin Sawyer with 42 points, while Jon West and Andy Turle were third on 41.

On Tuesday the Ladies Section also played, in a Halloween Stableford – with tricks (penalty points deducted if a person 3-putts) or treats (bonus points for chipping in off the green or single-putting on the green) thrown in for good measure.

In the Silver Division it was Mary-Jo Shepherd who triumphed with 37 points, one ahead of second placed Jenny Scobie with 36.

Judy Powell with 42 points was the winner in the Bronze Division, second place was claimed by Heather Crump with 40, and Vicky Davies was third on countback ahead of Jill Paul after both returned 35.

The only two of the day was carded by lady captain Jenny Bevan.

The nine-hole Halloween Stableford was won by Ann Williams.

Last week’s Dallas Scramble Medal format played in teams of three was won by Paulette Bamberger-Worton, Anne George and Maureen Hailes with nett 54, two ahead of nearest rivals Janet Kingston, Judy Powell and Senga Westwater with 56.

The winners of the Ladies Section Summer knock out cups were: Sale Cup (Silver Division Matchplay) – winner Terina Parker; runner-up Rosie Spragg.

Sully Cup (Bronze Division Matchplay) – winner Margaret Blackaller; runner-up Anna Rees.

Ladies’ Captain and Vice Captain’s Foursomes Salver – winners Jacky Ford and Louise Worth; runners-up Ali McGown and Georgia Richards.

Summer Eclectic Salver won by Jeanne Leader Summer Eclectic Stableford won by Judy Powell on count-back from Anna Rees.

FOR the second year running, Pete Jeffery has won the Eric Hood Trophy for the nine-match Seniors Summer Eclectic at Vivary Golf Club.

His rigorous consistency and dedication to the task in hand has once again paid off, as this year he recorded a total of 56.

Second, showing real determination, was Rod Hobson with 57.7, and in third was Phil Nicholls on 59.

Jeffery also won the Seniors Autumn Stableford, recording 40 points playing off a handicap of nine.

Not far behind was Steven Baker, second on 39, and Barry Hembrow, third on 38.

Rod Hobson and Chris Heaslewood tied with 39 in the September Driver, but Hobson took first with a better back nine, while Steve Berry (38) placed third.

The Seniors October Medal saw Charles Hall and Keith Parker come home with 67 each, but Hall won on countback.

Of three players who recorded 68, Colin Woodford had the best back nine to register third.

The Michaelmas Stableford was closely-fought, but it was Dave Hinton who emerged the victor with 40 points.

One away were Mark Lane and Pete Jeffery, but Lane had the better back nine to take second.

Chris Stone won the Equinox Stableford by compiling a healthy 41 points.

Two behind, on 39, was second-placed Bob Stock, with third going to Keith Parker on 36 after a better back nine than Phil Nicholls.

The Summer Knockout finally reached its autumn conclusion when captain Dave Thomas beat his vice-captain Phil Nicholls on the 19th hole in a tight game of nip and tuck.
