STUDENT Jack Turner won silver at the English Schools home international indoor pentathlon championships.

Turner, a Wellington School student in Year 12, was making his England debut at the Emirates Stadium, in Glasgow, on Friday, after winning the National championships back in September.

He said: “My aim was always to get on the podium, so I am very happy with my result.

“Training was going well, with my coach Kevin Skinner and I concentrating on the events that needed improvement, especially long jump after my knee injury at the beginning of the season.

“The end result was a massive 60 cm PB in long jump.

“The indoor hurdles went without a hitch, despite it being 60m instead of the 100m outdoor distance I am used to and I achieved the second fastest time of the day.

“My coach and my parents were there for my debut, providing their support.”

As well as his individual performance winning him silver, his Under-17s boys England team also won silver.

Along with the impressive PB in long jump with a distance of 6.76m, Turner gained three more PBs in 60m hurdles with a time of 8.29 sec, 200m 23.13 sec and 800m 2min 13 – an overall points score of 3,589.

CHAMPION: Jarvis Lumb.

SIBLINGS Jarvis and Mimi Lumb, both Wellington School pupils, are steaming ahead in an unusual sporting discipline: Modern Pentathlon.

Year 10 student Jarvis won the Under-15 Yorkshire Modern Pentathlon event with his unbeatable run, swim and shoot times.

And his sister Mimi, who is in Year 7, came an impressive third in the Under-13 Girls Yorkshire Modern Pentathlon.

The sport is gaining momentum at Wellington School, thanks to the coaches’ hard work there.

Helmed by Lucy MacAlister, pupils have also benefited from the expert tuition of GB international pentathlete Lydia Rosling, while pupils from Year 2 to Year 10 did sessions with GB team fencing coaches John Rees and Joseph Pearce.
