Bridgwater Town 1, Wellington AFC 2

WELLINGTON AFC earned themselves three vital points in the battle to beat the drop, winning their Boxing Day match at Bridgwater Town to hand their local rivals a fifth straight defeat.

Goals from Tim Legg and Paolo Borges won the day for the visitors, with Jake Llewellyn's strike for the Robins was too little, too late.

The home team began well, with Ryan Burrows played through one-on-one but poking his effort wide, and Lee Begg heading wide from a set-piece.

Wellington survived the early pressure and settled down, but Begg was involved again just before the half hour, heading Jack Jenkins' corner narrowly over.

The hosts were then reliant on goalkeeper Jake Viney bailing them out after a defensive mix-up, as the first half ended goalless.

As the rain poured down, Harry Horton had a sight of goal for the Robins, but his cross-shot flashed across the area.

The breakthrough came on 65 minutes - shortly after the ball had been cleared off the Bridgwater line amid a goalmouth scramble - as a free-kick was sent to the back post and Legg pounced.

The Robins sought an equaliser, and after substitute Llewellyn had a goal ruled out for offside, Shaun Copp had a shot well saved, and Llewellyn fired over.

There was the opportunity for the Tangerines to counter-attack, with Viney saving one effort but then being dispossessed 30 yards from his goal, and Borges finished coolly on 90 minutes.

Llewellyn pulled one back in added time, but the visitors would not be denied the precious three points, with Sam Towler putting in a man-of-the-match performance.

The victory takes 16th-placed Wellington onto 21 points - nine clear of second-bottom Wells City - and they are at home to Bridport (who are 10th) on Saturday, December 30 (ko 3pm).
