Toolstation Western League
Premier Division
Wellington AFC 2, Odd Down 1

WELLINGTON are up to 14th place in the Toolstation Western League Premier Division table after a good home win over Odd Down, who they leapfrog as a result of a good second half that saw them come from behind to take all three points, writes David Derrick.

It was a harsh and snowy day at North Street, so another pitch inspection was needed before the game could proceed.

A dour first half was light on major action points, but it was Odd Down who carried the larger threat as centre-back Mitch Woodgate and goalkeeper Tom Welch combined on more than one occasion to repel the Bath-based visitors.

Joe Chamberlain exploited the right wing well, but did not get the killer ball into the box despite his good efforts.

At 0-0 at half time the score was about right all told.

That evenness was removed just into the second half when Callen Simpson opened the scoring for Odd Down with a crisp finish past Welch after a flowing move from the visitors.

Wellington were playing up the hill in the second half and so they knew they had to work hard to get level.

That they did, through Conor Bryant’s rasping finish, and there was more still to come.

George Sinnott cleverly scooped the ball over keeper Ed Baldy to nestle in the back of the net, giving the Tangerines a lead that they would hang on to.

The visitors did attack for what was left of the game and were close to a share of the spoils, but the hosts held on for three good points.

They will look to use successive home games against Clevedon Town and Hallen to further improve their league standing, and to go into their Somerset FA Premier Cup semi-final with Southern League West side Paulton Rovers (March 27) in fine fettle.

IN the Toolstation Western League First Division, Bishops Lydeard were left to rue missed chances as they lost 1-0 at home to Wincanton Town.

The result leaves them 10th in the table ahead of a match at Chard Town tomorrow (Wednesday).

Their hosts are 11th in the league standings, one point behind, but they have three games in hand on Lydeard.

In the Somerset County League, none of Staplegrove, Watchet Town or Minehead AFC had games at the weekend, with the weather frustrating many teams across the South West.

Watchet Town Reserves did play, however, and they made it through to the Somerset FA Intermediate Cup final by beating Worle Reserves.

Goals from Oli Jones (2) and Mike Williams (penalty) saw the hosts win the semi-final clash 3-1.

They will play Peasedown Albion in the final (date tbc).
