Somerset Premier
Taunton Tone 74, Bridgwater Saturn 22

Tone hosted Bridgwater’s Saturn and recorded their biggest win of the season, 74-22.

Vicki Cornish (GS) did her usual fine work, marking both defences out of the game and displaying dominance in the shooting circle.

Helen Lucas and Jade Barnett then took up the mantle when Cornish picked up a knock.

Leila Aladin (GA) took some amazing balls from driving in, along with shooting from distance.

Nicole Smith attacked and defended confidently, with many fantastic feeds to goal, receiving the player of the match award.

Freya Bryant’s feeding was second to none, linking up all Toners effortlessly.

Ria Binding and Lucy Monk were a force to be reckoned with, meanwhile – turning over, rebounding, switching and intercepting everything, as well as limiting Saturn’s shooting.

Last, but certainly not least, is fantastic captain Kim Tong at WD, who disrupted Saturn’s attacking play, gave support up and down the court and kept team morale high throughout, steering her side to victory.

This fantastic result accurately represents Tone’s hard work week in and out, and their commitment to each other, the team and the game.

Somerset Division 2
Taunton Priory 37, Sydenham Rubies 46

Both teams anticipated a tough game in the heat but Priory started well with the ball moved quickly down the court by Tina Follett, Andrea Dobson, Sarah Hughes and Mel Reynolds.

That provided opportunities for Lucy Cox, who converted long shots from the start.

The second quarter saw a change to Rubies’ defence, though Priory kept the lead (23-18).

Kate Durbin picked up the C bib for the third quarter, and she responded well, with some accurate passing into the shooters.

Despite strong back options for the centre passes, Rubies pulled even and went one ahead (30-29).

Priory came out fighting for the final quarter but ultimately the momentum was with Rubies, who extended their lead to win.

Priory also met top-of-the-table Wells’ Bishops in a midweek fixture, winning 35-29.

After playing them the weekend previously in the KO Cup, Priory knew it was going to be a hard battle.

They came out strongly to win the first quarter 9-7, which became 18-16 at half time.

Priory continued to keep the ball flowing down the court and into the shooters to stretch the lead to 28-22 at the end of the third quarter, an advantage which they held on to as they claimed a superb victory.

Both teams settled into the game in the second quarter, moving the ball around the court well, defending and shooting with accuracy (26-20).

In the third quarter Blackdown got into their rhythm, playing well and feeding the ball accurately into the shooters (40-30), a theme which continued in the final quarter.

Hovelands 61, Sharks 25

IT was a great weekend for table-topping Hovelands as they hit the road headed for Crewkerne to take on Sharks.

Despite arriving at the wrong venue initially, Hovelands found their way and took a comfortable early lead.

Shooters Polly Land and Nicki Berzina were ruthless in attack, aided by Kelly Sully and Kerry Nelson.

Sharks did win the third quarter but Hovelands quickly recovered to get back in the groove for the final quarter.

Parkfield 48, Harlequins 37

THIS hybrid Parkfield and Queensway side put on a sterling performance against a strong Harlequins team.

‘Parkway’ worked so hard and played the strongest game they have played all season, with everyone giving it 100 per cent.

Defenders Lily, Anna and Eve kept Quins on their toes, managing to win the rebounds in order to pass off to Rach and V in centre court.

The team won every quarter against a very experienced side, with few errors.

Parkway seamlessly brought the ball up the centre, and strong shooting from Evie and Soph saw them go six up in the first quarter.

The winning form continued throughout.

A special mention to Sophie, Eve and Lily who played up a team and excelled.

Kites 35, Queensway 31

QUEENSWAY lost to Kites despite a hard-fought match where they battled throughout, and Holly Byrne impressed at GD.

End-to-end play throughout meant a tight scoreboard, but with two quarters lost, one won and one drawn it just wasn’t enough to take the win.

Somerset Division 3
Newbarn 29, Kingfishers 31

NEWBARN were in this match throughout but just fell away in the final quarter.

After five wins on the trot, it was a closely-fought game with Kelly and Rosa working hard after playing for Queensway earlier in the day.

Kelly claimed numerous turn overs in defence to earn player of the match.

Jaz stepped up, showing good support through mid-court, and Sarah came in at centre to show her experience on court.

Newbarn showed some good teamwork all across the court but it was hard going under that beaming sun.
